Why we don’t do BFCM gimmicks
Black Friday wasn’t invented by customers – it grew out of US retail chaos in the 1960s and was later turned into a marketing machine by big-box retailers. Cyber Monday was literally created in 2005 by a US retail lobby group to push more online spending. Neither of those traditions were designed with Australian families’ best interests in mind.
If a business can suddenly offer 70% off physical products, something’s not right. To break even at 70% off, they’ve been running at roughly a 333% markup. At the same time, Google Ads and other marketing costs can be 2–3 times higher during BFCM.
So why would anyone spend 3× more on ads just to “give away” product below cost? It usually means one of three things:
- They’ve had huge margins all along
- They’re dumping stock at a loss. Why?
- They’ve jacked up prices first to create a fake discount
That’s not honesty – that’s theatre. We won’t participate in that.
What we do instead
